Nicotine Poisoning

November 18, 2009

I have a friend who recently contracted a moderate case of nicotine poisoning in my presence.  This notorious chain smoker of a man had traveled to a hookah bar with us that night.  He began to have body-wide spasms in his chair – apparently because of the cold chills he was suffering from as a result of the nicotine overdose.   It was similar in nature to a seizure.   We were not absolutely certain that it was nicotine poisoning until the following morning.  His symptoms, however, nearly drove us to rush him to the hospital.  It is now clear that this individual overindulged on tobacco products – being, that night, sheisha (hookah) tobacco and cigarette tobacco in synergy – and subsequently suffered from a severe bout of nicotine poisoning.  The article states that at his age it would take 3 packs of cigarets (60 milligrams) to cause him to go into this state.

Blackout Drunk

November 11, 2009

http://www.wisegeek.com/what-is-blackout-drinking.htm

This article contained information on how blacking out actually affects somones cognative memory.  A part i found especcially intresting was when they said “Blackout drinking does not necessarily cause people to lose consciousness or “pass out.” Instead, high alcohol consumption temporarily interferes with the function of the brain, causing the brain to be unable to retain information in short term memory”       this means blacking out isent even passing out,  blacking out is a much longer process with alot of room to get in trouble before you beacome docile and you wont rember any of it due to being unable to transform short term memories into long term ones under the influence of that much alcohol.

This article contained alot of information about drinking, blacking out, and alcohol related risks.  One thing i found paticullary intresting was that even when women consume the same amount of alchol as men they beacome much more affected and are also much more in danger for alcohol related health risk such as  cirrhosis , alcohol–induced damage of the heart muscle, and nerve damage.

AID’s CURE?

November 4, 2009

http://www.avert.org/cure-for-aids.htm

It astounds me that cures for aid’s are sold much like trinkets to ward off bad luck in some more undeveloped parts of the world.  This article even sugested that in some places it is a myth that sex with children will cure aid’s.

Abortion increases suicide risk

October 28, 2009

The article describes how rates of sicide are much higher in women ages 15-49  (reproductive age).   Women who have abortions commit suscide 6x    more than women who have their children and 2x more than women who have miscarrages.  I feel that this comes manily from the depression associated with the way society views women who have abortions,   as well as the condition of most woem who have abortions.   They often feel lonley after their procedure (sometimes beacuse they are alone) and turn to substance abuse which further increases their chances of mental brakdown and suicide.

Walnuts supplemented into your diet can reduce the risks of heart related diseases.  This is due to the heavy antioxidants contianed within the nuts.  Walnuts also contain many nutrients such as manganese, copper and tryptophan.  They are used heavily in Mediterranean diets in sauces and other forms.

Smokings Effects on Sleep

August 24, 2009

http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2008/02/080204172250.htm

I find it intresting that the stress resulting from nicotine withdrawl is the reason many smokers wake constantly with midnight insonimia.  Also sleep deprivation is one of the leading reasons smokers find it so hard to battle their addiction.
